Step inside the Texas school district that already arms its teachers
While the nation debates whether teachers should carry guns to protect students from armed intruders, the question’s already settled in one Texas school district, where educators have had firearms on campus for years. And while no teacher in Callisburg, Texas, has been called on yet to fire a weapon in defense of a classroom, students in the Callisburg Independent School District say they feel safer knowing their teachers can protect.
1997 Pearl High School shooting
On October 1, 1997, during the Pearl High School shooting in Mississippi, Assistant Principal Joel Myrick played a pivotal role in stopping the attack. After hearing gunshots, Myrick retrieved his Colt .45 semi-automatic pistol from his truck, where it was stored in a secured case. He then confronted the shooter, 16-year-old Luke Woodham, who was attempting to flee the scene in his vehicle. Myrick pointed the firearm at Woodham, causing him to lose control of his car and crash. He then held Woodham at gunpoint until police arrived, effectively preventing further violence.

As subject matter experts in K-12 school security, we are always seeking solutions that meet the diverse needs of schools across the country. Layer Lock is one of those solutions that truly stands out.
We understand that each district — and even each state — approaches staff firearm policies differently. Some districts want to offer the option for select, trained staff to carry firearms, while others do not. For those that do, Layer Lock provides an outstanding, secure solution. It ensures that authorized staff can have immediate access to a firearm in a crisis, while preventing theft, misuse, or unauthorized access during the school day.
Layer Lock strikes the perfect balance between readiness and safety. It empowers schools that choose to offer armed protection while maintaining strict safeguards to protect students, staff, and the integrity of the weapon itself. It’s a solution that every school considering this option should evaluate.
We highly recommend Layer Lock for any district seeking a responsible, secure, and effective method to implement armed staff programs without compromising safety.

For a myriad of reasons, I am not an advocate for teachers to open carry in the classroom. LayerLock is different. It’s a safe and common sense solution to help fight back against violent situation when they occur. As Ben Franklin said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. LayerLock is the best answer to the threat of violence in our schools.
